Option B
Facing Adversity, Building Resilience,
and Finding Joy
Option B, Facing Adversity, Building Resilience, and Finding Joy by Sheryl Sandberg and Adam Grant begins with death and heartbreak but ends with hope. Facebook’s COO, Sheryl Sandberg and her husband, Dave were on vacation in Mexico when he died suddenly of an arrythmia, leaving Sheryl and their two children in a sea of unfathomable and unexpected pain. When the dust settled, she and Wharton professor and psychologist Adam Grant worked together to write this beautiful book on navigating life after loss.
Option B outlines Sheryl’s life post Dave, exploring topics such as friendship, joy, resilience (especially when walking with children through adversity), grieving in the workplace, and laughing again. This book guides the reader with compassion and integrity through the roller coaster of grief. While the book specifically speaks toward spousal death, it is applicable to every person who has experienced loss. Just as importantly, it is a wonderful resource for those walking with loved ones through grief. Sandberg and Grant write for every background and ethnicity, religious or otherwise, and they do it with grace and authenticity. This book is an absolute must read (and own and highlight) and should be a fixture on bookshelves everywhere.
